In order to prepare for the fall semester, all members must attend Band Camp in August. During this week there is a strong emphasis put on learning music, marching fundamentals and building relationships between the drum majors, leadership members, returning members and new members as well as within each section. In addition to the work put in to make the band sound and look as good as it can, nightly activities are scheduled to create a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
The Spirit of Stony Brook Marching Band invites middle school and high school students to be members of the band twice a year. Band Day is celebrated once during football season and once during basketball season to give these students a real feel of what it is like to be a part of a college marching band as well as pep band. Students will perform a song on the field with the band during its halftime performance at a football game and will play music in the stands throughout a whole basketball game.
Each fall, Stony Brook University celebrates Parent/Family Day, a day that is filled with many fun events and tours for students to experience with their parents and family members. The day concludes with a football game. Before the football game, The Spirit of Stony Brook hosts a Family Day Tailgate for all students and family members to enjoy. A BBQ lunch is served, merchandise is sold, raffle baskets are present and mingling is encouraged!
To wrap up the year, a Band Banquet is held in the spring semester. Band staff, band members, family as well as University friends and partners are invited to enjoy the night together. Many students are honored during this night for their contribution to the band, musicianship, leadership, spirit and academic excellence. Prestigious awards include the Jerrold L. Stein Rising Star Award; John. J. Leddy Director's Award; Shirley Strum Kenny Founders Award; Stephen Stakey Unsung Hero Award; Flagship Award; Flair Award and Section of the Year.
