Christopher Parks, Ed.D. was appointed as the new Director of Athletic Bands at Stony Brook University for their 10th anniversary season. He took the reigns of the Athletic Bands program following the successful leadership of John Leddy (2006-2013) and Shayna Stahl (2013-2016).

Before coming to Stony Brook, Dr. Parks served as the Director of Athletic Bands and Music Organizations at Boston University for 10 years. In this position he was responsible for leading the Marching Band, Pep Band, Concert Band, Summer Scarlet Band, The BU Big Band, and the BU Commencement Brass Ensemble. He also oversaw the All-Campus Orchestra, Winter Percussion Ensemble and three jazz ensembles. Also during his time at BU, Dr. Parks was contacted by John Leddy, then the Director of Athletic Bands for Stony Brook, for input on starting an marching band at Stony Brook University.  
 
Following his time at BU, Dr. Parks served as the Associate Director of Bands at Kell High School in Cobb County Georgia where he began his doctoral studies in Organizational Leadership and Communication. Most recently, Dr. Parks served as the managing director of the Baton Rouge Youth Coalition, a non-profit organization whose mission is to serve under-resourced students in their quest to be the first in their family to attend college. 
 
Dr. Parks has garnered many awards and much recognition over his 20 year career. In 2013, he was awarded the National Band Association Citation of Excellence for his performance with the Kell High School Wind Symphony at the University of Georgia's JanFest. Parks is also the recipient of the Boston University Athletic Department's Campus Community Recognition Award presented to "the individual whose support over the past year has proven limitless." In addition, he was honored with the NCAA ring by Coach Jack Parker of the Boston University Hockey Team following their national championship campaign. Parks is also a talented musician in his own right, having performed trumpet with various national and international touring productions of Sweet Charity, The King and I, and The Sound of Music.  
 
Dr. Parks earned his Bachelor's degree in Music from the University of Texas El Paso and Master's in Music Performance from Boston University. He holds a doctoral degree in Organizational Leadership and Communication from Northeastern University. His research and scholarly interests center on organizational learning systems, contemporary models of leadership, arts activities impact on resiliency and retention/persistence. His doctoral dissertation focused on the impact of arts-based co-curricular activities on academic resilience for students at academic risk.
 
Dr. Parks is a dynamic professional who brings with him over two decades of distinguished experience as a musician, educator and community builder to the Stony Brook Athletic Bands program. 
 
 
 

Malafronte

Vincent Malafronte

Vinny has been the Woodwind Instructor and a Field Technician for the Spirit of Stony Brook University Marching Band since 2012. He has also served as the Director and Coordinator of Stony Brook's Summer Band Camp program. When he's not at SBU, Vinny teaches in the Connetquot School District where he is one of the high school band directors at Connetquot High School.

Always taking a very active role, Vinny is also the Assistant Director of the marching band and stage crew advisor for the school musicals.

Vinny earned his Bachelor of Music degree in music education from Ithaca College in 2006. He studied percussion with mallet percussion pioneer Gordon Stout and drum set with Conrad Alexander. He was a member of the percussion ensemble and frequently arranged its pieces. He also studied jazz with Steve Brown and conducting under Dr. Steven Peterson. Vinny earned his Masters in Liberal Arts Studies from Stony Brook University in 2011. 

Vinny brings a wealth of knowledge about marching technique, instrument technique, instrument repair, and the Spirit of Stony Brook program.


 

Leddy

John Leddy arrived at Stony Brook University in 2006 and is the founding director of The Spirit of Stony Brook Marching Band. Prior to that, he taught music in the Connetquot school district for 33 years where he directed concert band, jazz ensemble, and marching band at all levels.

Mr. Leddy has a Bachelor of Music degree from the Crane School of Music at Potsdam College and a Master of Arts from Stony Brook University. He studied percussion with James Peterscak at the Crane School, timpani with Morris Lang of the New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, and jazz drum set with Jim Chapin, Joe Morello, and Ed Shaughnessy. Mr. Leddy was the recipient of a Summer Fellowship for music educators from Northwestern University, where he studied conducting with Mallory Thompson and Don Owens. He also served as the Director of Jazz Studies at the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts. 

Since his arrival to the Stony Brook campus, Mr. Leddy has been the recipient of the following awards: 2008 Seawolves Award from the Department of Athletics in recognition of contributions to the Athletic Department, the university and student athletes; 2009 “Man of the Year” Award from The Spirit of Stony Brook Marching Band leadership; 2010 Distinguished Service Award presented by Stony Brook University Student Affairs for outstanding service.

Mr. Leddy is an active member of MENC, NYSSMA, SCMEA, NMEA, Percussive Arts Society, the International Society for Jazz Education, and the College Band Directors National Association.

 

Barnett

Jeff Barnett is a longtime member and proud alum of the Stony Brook community. After having completed his B.S. in psychology from Stony Brook University, Jeff went on to hold several positions at the university in Student Affairs, Enrollment & Retention Management and the Undergraduate Colleges. Jeff earned his graduate degree in Higher & Post-Secondary Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.

 His professional background reaches across both Student & Academic Affairs and includes experience with academic and organization advising, orientation, first year student issues, large scale programming, student learning outcomes assessment, learning communities programs, student success initiatives, building a sense of campus community. Jeff is committed to students and to building collaborative partnerships between student and academic affairs. He has published and presented at national & regional conferences on a variety of these topics and has received departmental Distinguished Service Awards in the areas of Student Development and Systems Innovations, Research & Assessment for his work.
