CAPS After Hours

It is 3 am, and you are freaking out about a paper! Your anxiety is so high that you can't even concentrate on writing, and you don't know what to do. Call CAPS After Hours!

Students can now call CAPS and speak to a licensed mental health counselor anytime, day or night. To do so, call CAPS at (631) 632- 6720; if it is after regular business hours, press 2 to speak with a counselor.

Students can also contact CAPS After Hours directly 24/7 at (855) 509-5742. You will be connected with a licensed mental health counselor who is familiar with our campus community and local resources.

1. Is this only for emergencies?

No! You can call CAPS After Hours if you want support, even if you are not in crisis.

2. Can I speak to a counselor on the phone, instead of coming to CAPS?

If you are hesitant to come to CAPS, you can certainly call CAPS After Hours for support. You will be able to find out whether therapy might be helpful for you, get answers to your questions and discuss any barriers getting in your way of seeking treatment. However, when you call CAPS After Hours, you will not necessarily speak to the same counselor every time. Thus, students are encouraged to use CAPS After Hours as a supplement to treatment, not a replacement.

3. Can I remain anonymous?

Yes. Students will be asked to provide their name and student ID number; however, students can choose to remain anonymous, if they prefer.

4. My friend is in crisis. Can we call together?

Yes! You are strongly encouraged to call CAPS After Hours. You can call together, or independently, depending on your preference. If this is an emergency situation, contact University Police at 911 from a campus phone, or (631) 632-3333 from a cell phone.

5. I have a therapist outside of CAPS. Can I still call CAPS After Hours?

If you see a therapist outside of CAPS, you are encouraged to contact your treatment provider directly. However, if you are unable to connect with your counselor (ex. on nights and weekends), you are welcome to call CAPS After Hours for support.
