Individual Counseling

Offers students the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a therapist to discuss personal concerns in a safe and supportive environment.

Couples Counseling

Offered to couples experiencing difficulties in their relationship. Counseling gives couples the opportunity to meet with a therapist to discuss concerns, learn ways to improve communication, and increase their ability to negotiate relationships.  

Crisis

If you have an urgent situation that cannot wait for an appointment, walk-in hours are available Monday–Friday. Counseling is also available at the University Counseling Center .

Monday—Thursday 12:00PM to 8:00PM
Friday 12:00PM to 6:00PM
*All counseling is available to Stony Brook students free of charge*

   

Confidentiality

Your contact with the Wo/Men's Center is confidential and is not part of your academic record. The Wo/Men's Center operates within professional guidelines and laws designed to protect the privacy of your records.

Groups

Various groups are offered throughout the year. Many students find their concerns can best be addressed through counselor-facilitated interactions with other students who relate to their experiences in some way.  

Groups are created based on student need., such as: an LGBT support group, Beyond Food & Body (a body image support group), meditation groups, and dissertation support groups.

Outreach
We provide outreach programming to students, faculty, and staff on issues that highlight women's and men's growth, well-being, and healthy development. We are also available to train residential hall employees, staff, and campus groups on a variety of topics. Possible topics for outreach presentations include relationships, gender identity and expression, sexual assault, domestic violence, and gay, lesbian, and bisexual issues. Some of our programs for this past semester were:

  • Transgender 101 
  • Body Images: Body Facts
  • “Let's Talk About Sex”

Library

The Wo/Men’s Center houses a lending library with a growing collection of books on topics ranging from health and wellness, to feminist studies, and fiction. Additionally, the library features brochures, pamphlets, newsletters, and other reference materials pertaining to women’s concerns.

We also have a pool table! Students are welcome to come in and play a game or two of pool and relax. Or, you can come in and have some coffee and cookies while you browse the books...Either way, the space is open for everyone’s relaxation and enjoyment.

The library is open daily, but hours may vary. Please call 632-9666 to find out open hours, or stop by Room 221 if you are in the Union.
