A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN OF STUDENTS

Welcome to the Office of the Dean of Students at Stony Brook University. It is my hope that these pages will serve as a valuable tool and resource to provide information about the Dean of Students and related areas. You will find many useful features here, including information about the Dean of Students staff, information for parents, and facts about the Office of the Dean of Students.

The Office of the Dean of Students plays a vital role in maintaining and enriching campus community. We offer leadership for co-curricular programs and activities and plan initiatives to improve student life, facilitate student achievement, and welcome and orient new students. Stony Brook is a large and diverse community with unique character and enormous opportunity. There is something for everyone, and our office can help you find that “something.”

Student life on this campus is shaped by the students. Involvement and leadership are key ingredients for success, and it's never too early or to late to start participating in student activities. Individuals who participate in clubs and organizations in addition to attending classes report greater levels of satisfaction with their overall undergraduate experiences. And many students even say that much of their learning in college took place outside of the classroom—whether in a research lab, at an internship, or at a club meeting.

We at the Office of the Dean of Students encourage you to get involved and stay active, but we are also here to assist in times of difficulty. The Dean provides support for a variety of student concerns, including illness, death in the family, financial difficulties, academic trouble, and other personal emergencies. Students may seek assistance, advocacy, and satisfactory resolutions to problems.

Feel free to stop into our offices or call at any time to speak to someone about your interests, concerns, or questions. We are here to help you make the most of your college experience, and to do that we need to hear from you.

Good luck in all of your endeavors here at Stony Brook and beyond.

Dr. Jerrold L. Stein
