In Memorium: The University mourns the loss of student Susan Facini
Memorial on Thursday, December 8, 2011
To all Faculty, Staff and Students:
It is with deep sadness that I send this message regarding the loss
of a beloved undergraduate of the Stony Brook community, Susan
Facini, who was lost suddenly on Wednesday evening to an apparent
cardiac arrest. On behalf of the Stony Brook University community, I
would like to express my deepest condolences to Susie's family as
well as her friends and others at Stony Brook who knew and cared for
her. Susie was a sophomore who grew up locally in Rocky Point and
lived in Gray College here on campus. She was a promising young woman
with great school spirit and pride in Stony Brook University. Her
mother told us that she would proudly chant her affiliation as a
Seawolf around the house, and she was friends with many in the Spirit
of Stony Brook marching band and a loyal fan of Stony Brook Rugby.
The Office of the Dean of Students is advising students, faculty and staff of resources, listed below, that are available to support the campus community at this difficult time. Visitation services for Susie were held over the Thanksgiving weekend.
A campus memorial is planned for Thursday, December 8, 2011 in SAC Ballroom B at 7:15pm.
Anyone with additional questions, concerns or needing assistance should feel free to contact the office of the Dean of Students at 631-632-7320.

Stony Brook University Students Groups to Compete in Newman's Own Foundation 2nd Annual Campus Community Service Challenge with America East Conference
9 Nonprofits to Participate for $25,000 Top Grant in Unique Philanthropic Initiative
Stony Brook University students are excited to participate in the Newman's Own Foundation Campus Community Service Challenge in partnership with the America East Conference. Launched last year at the America East Conference pre-season basketball tipoff, this unique program encourages the practice of philanthropy on America East campuses and in surrounding communities. Last year, over $100,000 was awarded to nonprofits working with the nine America East institutions.
"Paul Newman believed that giving back is the greatest opportunity and responsibility for making the world a better place," said Bob Forrester, president of Newman's Own Foundation. "Tomorrow's leaders are today's university students, and we want to recognize and encourage the spirit of philanthropy among these young people. Last year's inaugural Challenge proved to us the value of doing this one-of-a-kind program again this year."
Last Year's Winner:
Stony Brook University's exciting and successful Alternative Spring Break Outreach (A.S.B.O.) program was rewarded with a $7500 grant to the Stony Brook Foundation to help fund it's outstanding efforts of communities in the wake of disaster. Founded in 2005 by a small band of students who felt compelled to join efforts to help rebuild New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Over 50 students annual have since that time made subsequent trips back to New Orleans and later traveled to Galveston, Texas to help restore damage to communities, critical infrastructure and waterways in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, and most recently, to Atlanta, Georgia in 2010 to assist with flood relief efforts. The funds awarded from Newman's Own foundation have helped ASBO to expand it's outreach this year both in terms of the number of students that can participate and to more than one community in need.
Process:
This year, Stony Brook is conducting an on-campus application process to allow for multiple groups to apply and participate. One campus winner will be selected by a campus review committee. The winning student organization will serve as the Stony Brook representative and be submitted to the America East competition where they will participate on behalf of its nonprofit partner for the top grant of $25,000. One service-focused student group from each member university, in connection with its nonprofit partner, will again participate for a Newman's Own Foundation grant. The final grant decisions will be made based on:
- The level of the student group's involvement with its nonprofit partner, and the degree to which that involvement reflects Paul Newman's philanthropic spirit of creativity and commitment.
- The actual mission and programs of the nonprofit, the populations and purposes it serves, and the impact the Foundation’s grant will have on it.
The top grant will be $25,000. The next two grants will be for $15,000 and $10,000 respectively. Six nonprofits will each receive a $5,000 grant from Newman's Own Foundation. In total, over $100,000 will be awarded to nominated nonprofits and other charities.
The nine student group/non-profit pairings will be reviewed and voted on by the Challenge's Selection Panel. Leaders in philanthropy and social activism, the judges are:
- Dikembe Mutombo, NBA legend and well-known philanthropist who currently serves as a Global Ambassador for the NBA.
- Rebecca Lobo, basketball analyst for ESPN and former player in the Women’s National Basketball Association
- Ben Goldhirsch, founder of GOOD Magazine
The winners will be presented throughout the America East Men's and Women's Basketball Championship held at the University of Hartford from March 3-6, 2011.
How to apply:
1. Request application by emailing Jeffrey.Barnett@stonybrook.edu
2. Email completed application to Jeffrey.Barnett@stonybrook.edu by no later than Friday, January 21, 2011 at 12 p.m.
3. Stony Brook Review Committee will review and select campus winning entry and notify applicants by 5 p.m. on Friday, January 21, 2011.
4. Winning entry will be submitted to the America East Conference Competition as Stony Brook University's representative application.
5. Student group of winning entry will work with Assistant Dean of Students to finalize application materials for successful competition of application for January 25, 2011 deadline.

SB students make an impact with Alternative Spring Break Outreach Effort
SURFSIDE BEACH, TEXAS— Images of the devastation Hurricane Ike left behind provided the incentive for 40 New York college students to drive 30 hours to the storm-affected areas of the Texas Gulf Coast.
The Stony Brook University cleanup team was in Surfside Beach on Thursday, April 9, working to leave the beachfront better than when it arrived. Earlier in the week, students helped out on Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula.
“We’ve seen all sorts of debris, from shoes and clothes and baby bottles to a house with the front blown out,” said junior Aysha Khan, 20. “It’s crazy.”

At Stony Brook, Tradition is Red Hot
Our color? Think red, as in red hot. By every measure of success — student achievements, faculty scholarship and teaching honors, pioneering scientific and medical research, quality health care, community service, athletics — Stony Brook University has attained national recognition and is at the forefront of exciting change.
In honor of our rising star and to proclaim our pride, we've initiated a new tradition on campus: Students, faculty, and staff wear the signature Stony Brook red at games and on Fridays to show support for our NCAA Division I Seawolves.
That's just one of many memorable and intriguing traditions we've established in a mere 50 years. To learn more, page through this site.
