URECA Celebration 2008

The URECA (Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities)Celebration, which now takes place every spring, is a university-wide event that showcases the accomplishments of 150-200 Stony Brook students working with faculty mentors in virtually every discipline. Students display their work through research posters, art exhibits, talks, and performances. Many undergraduates are published for the first time in the URECA-sponsored Collection of Undergraduate Research Abstracts and Creative Project Descriptions.

- SAC & SBU Facilities Operations announces 2007-2008 Usage & Resource fees
- SAC & SBU Facilities Operations Announce New Candle Policy

The use of candles in the SAC & SBU are now allowed. A Fire Marshall will not be necessary provided the following precautions are followed: flames must be protected by a glass/non-flammable encasement such as a votive or glass jar. The flame must be below the glass line. Taper candles used without a glass encasement are not allowed. To maximize safety precautions, event organizers are encouraged to use floating candles in water.
- SAC & SBU Facilities Operations Adds New Equipment to inventory

To serve the increasing needs of our event organizers, the Dept. of Facilities Operations recently added a portable LCD projector, laptop, and conference phone to our inventory. This means we now offer:
- 2 Portable LCD projectors in the SAC
- 1 portable LCD projector in the SBU
- 1 Laptop for the SAC & 1 Laptop for the SBU
- 1 Polycom conference phone capable of hosting conference calls and assisting with webcasts in the SAC.
- SAC & SBU Facilities Operations Announces New UNITI Cultural Center Available for Campus Needs

The new UNITI Cultural Center in the Stony Brook Union is open and available to serve the needs of the campus community. Supervised by the UCC Club, the space offers 2 conference style meeting rooms, a larger multi-purpose lecture room and a comfortable lounge space. The lounge space is open to the general public during normal building hours; the meeting spaces are available for reservations through the Facilities Reservations Office. While all campus departments are welcome to use the new spaces, the UCC especially encourages use by groups which seek to help foster an open and diverse campus community.
- SAC & SBU Facilities Operations Announce Commuter Commons Lower Level Recreation Room now open for games!

The Commuter Student Association, The Office of the Dean of Students, Commuter Student Services, and Department of Facilities Operations teamed together to provide the campus with a newly renovated Commuter Commons Recreation Room. The Lower Level now offers students an inviting environment to unwind with a large-screen TV, comfortable seating, pool table, foosball, poker table, and an assortment of board games. Stop by and check it out!
- SAC & SBU Facilities Operations Announces Union Auditorium now offers complete Audio/Visual services to the campus community.

The University recently completed an extensive renovation of the Union Auditorium which includes new lighting, retractable table-arm desks, wall coverings, stage curtain, refinished floor, LCD Projector, wireless microphones, and a DVD/CD player. Primarily intended to assist professors with class instruction, the 355-seat Auditorium is also the perfect place to host seminars, panel discussions, and presentations.

Student Activities Center Ballroom B now has a permanently installed LCD Projector in the ceiling. This allows event organizers greater flexibility with their room setup and, more importantly, provides a sharper and brighter picture than ever before.

Due to overwhelming demand for meeting spaces in our two student centers, the Department of Facilities Operations is pleased to announce a new meeting room for the campus community. SBU 247 offers two simultaneous room setups (conference & theater) to maximize its attractiveness to event organizers.
- SAC & SBU Facilities Operations helps reduce costs by offering an electronic piano.

Beginning with the Fall 2005 semester, the Department of Facilities Operations has a Yamaha PF1000 Electronic Piano available for events in the SAC. The piano offers a superb 88-key Graded Hammer Effect keyboard offering a huge selection of high quality voices with 259 professionally arranged accompaniment styles. The PF1000 is a superb piano capable of rich harmonic sounds just like on a real piano! Better yet, since this is an electronic piano event organizers no longer need to arrange for pianos to be delivered and tuned.
