Sustainability in Action

The Stony Brook Environmental Club challenged the campus to embolden its commitment to Sustainability by questioning some practices that had become so routine that few people stopped to consider the environmental impact. To that end, we are proud to announce:

  • All desk workspaces in the Student Activities Center and Stony Brook Union have convenient access to a garbage pail and blue paper recycling bin right at their desk. Bottle and Can recycling containers are located on each floor of our facilities and within close proximity of clustered work spaces.
  • Facilities Managers routinely remind tenants via meetings, e-mail distribution lists, and person contact about the importance of completely powering down workstations each night.
  • All third floor meeting rooms in the SAC are equipped with motion sensors to ensure that once rooms are empty the lights will turnoff even if the last person to leave forgot to hit the switch.
  • The SAC Lobby was recently upgraded with CFL bulbs thus minimizing the electrical draw needed to light one of the grandest lobbies on campus.
  • All offices of the Dean of Students have access to centralize duplex machines in both the Stony Brook Union and Student Activities Center. Further, each of these special machines now print double-sided by default.
  • A paper recycling campaign has been launched to reduce office paper consumption by 10% over the course of the 2008-2009 academic year. We may not be able to survive without printer cover sheets, but we can certainly breathe new life into the cover sheets once they've been used!
  • The Office of the Dean of Students has discontinued water bottle service for all offices. Instead, staff members are now encouraged to use the municipal filtered water supplies available from water fountains throughout each building.
  • The Division of Student Life and Office of Facilities Reservations will be working closely with event organizers to suggest alternative refreshment ideas in lieu of bottled water.

The Department of Facilities Operations is pleased to partner with the Earthstock planning committee each year. Truly one of the driving forces behind our campus creating a culture of sustainability, Earthstock is a university tradition which not only sees loyal seawolves growling at wanton waste, but also educates the local communities on ways in which we can all live in an eco-friendly community.
