Contact University Police immediately.
Please complete an Incident Communication Form (ICF) for all accidents.
Contact Facility Manager as soon as possible.
If a Facility Manager is not available, contact the Director of Facilities Operations by cell phone (631-831-1822).
A suspicious-looking box, package, object, or container in or near your work area may be a bomb or explosive material. Do not handle or touch the object. Move to a safe area and call the University Police immediately at 911. Use a telephone in a safe area. Do not operate any power switch, and do not activate the fire alarm.
If you receive a bomb threat (via the telephone):
- Stay calm and keep your voice calm.
- Pay close attention to details. Talk to the caller to obtain as much information as possible.
- Take notes. Ask questions:
- When will it explode?
- Where is it right now?
- What does it look like?
- Where did you leave it?
- Did you place the bomb?
- Who is the target?
- Observe the caller's:
- Speech patterns (accent, tone)
- Emotional state (angry, agitated, calm, etc.)
- Background noise (traffic, people talking and accents, music and type, etc.)
- Age and gender
- Write down other data, including date and time of call, and how threat was received (letter, note, telephone)
- Submit your notes from the telephone call or the bomb threat to University Police.
- Follow University Police’s instructions.
The Director of Facility Operations will coordinate all emergency closings for the Student Activities Center and Stony Brook Union. In the event the campus is closed, the Student Activities Center and Stony Brook Union may be opened.
Once fire alarm is sounded, all occupants must clear the building at the nearest exit.
Facility Manager must immediately call, and indicate to University Police that there is an alarm. Report and note zone if possible.
All Facilities Operations professional staff and designated student staff turn radio to Channel 1 for instructions and communication. Facility Manager then coordinates building clearing.
At no point should you put yourself in danger. If at any time you are in danger immediately leave the building at the nearest exit. Secure important items. Leave doors closed but unlocked.
Assign staff who have radios to clear a floor or floors. At this time also assign exterior door watch station.
During evacuation check stairways, bathrooms, stalls, offices, dressing rooms, and meeting rooms.
Maintain radio contact at all times.
Evacuate everyone at least 25 feet from the building.
Turn radio to channel 1 as soon as alarm goes off.
Report any occupant who cannot evacuate without assistance to the Facility Manager immediately. Assist them with evacuation.
Report to assigned exterior door watch after your assigned level has been cleared. Facility Manager will then exit building and wait for Fire Marshall outside.
Wait in a safe distance for the building to be cleared for reentry by the Fire Marshal, document name and time of clearance. The Fire Marshal and University Police are the only one to have the authority to clear the building.
If the building is cleared for reentry by the Fire Marshal, contact Food Service Manager, Bank Manager, Post Office Manager, Hair Salon Manager, and SeaWolf Market Manger first (They will gather in rear loading dock area). Admit the managers into the building to secure their cash operations. Once the Managers have secured the cash operations, then the signal is given for everyone to enter the building.
Contact all exterior door monitors to give the signal to reoccupy the building.
Contact Director of Facility Operations SAC & Union at a safe time whenever the fire alarm is sounded.
Complete an Incident Report
If professional staff with radio is available they can help coordinate evacuation. If they do not have a radio please have them monitor the exterior doors. Remember to never put yourself in danger.
All occupants must evacuate the building as soon as the fire alarm is sounded. The Facility Manager will help evacuate and clear the building.
Fire and Non-Fire Emergency Announcements
Announcements must be read prior to each and every event within the Student Activities Center and Stony Brook Union. Announcements must be read loud and clear.
In the unlikely event of a fire or non-fire emergency please evacuate the building as quickly and calmly as possible. The exits are located at the front and rear of the room, and are clearly marked.
Please gather a safe distance (25 ft.) from the building. Never use the elevator during a fire emergency.
