OF-THE-MONTH AWARDS - RESIDENTIAL

National Residence Hall Honorary

The National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) represents the top 1% of our residential student leaders. Of the Months, otherwise known as OTM’s, are one means NRHH utilizes to recognize outstanding students, advisors, and programs on the Stony Brook campus. OTM’s are written at individual schools, assessed on their campus level, and then submitted to the regional and national levels.

These categories are:

  • Advisor – An outstanding advisor is one who creates a supportive environment for the leaders they work with and are instrumental in helping the leaders they work with grow, learn, and develop.
  • Community – A community is a group of individuals that share a sense of belonging with other members of the group and share experiences that bind them together and make them a mutually identifiable group. An outstanding community is one that makes a positive impact on not only the other members of the group, but also the people and students around them.
  • Executive Board Member – This can be an executive member of any club or organization. Make sure you include some of the responsibilities of the position so the reader will know how they truly went above and beyond. Be sure to briefly include other activities the student is involved in. This shows that they are a well rounded leader and able to perform well in their position and still participate in other activities.
  • NRHH Chapter – The Gina M. Vanacore Chapter of NRHH (here at Stony Brook) does some fantastic work. They are often the ones recognizing others, but they are often deserving of recognition as well.
  • Resident Assistant – New and creative approaches to the position show a true dedication to helping students. Outstanding Resident Assistants have contributed to their floor/building community and offer creative programming opportunities.
  • Spotlight – This award is intended to recognize outstanding individuals who don't fit into any set category, such as Graduate Assistants, Food Service Personnel, faculty, night security, etc. These individuals have made a significant impact on an individual or a community. Note: The nominee cannot be an advisor, executive board member, resident assistant, or student.
  • Student – Any student can be nominated in this category. An outstanding student has put forth special effort during the month of nomination and has shown exceptional growth. He/she has made a significant contribution to the Stony Brook community.
  • First Year Experience – This category recognizes first year student leaders who have begun their college career by contributing to the community.
  • Office Assistant – Although often unnoticed, it can be the office assistant who helps our RHDs and quad offices run more efficiently and better serve our residents. These individuals have gone above and beyond in customer service and/or have shown an exceptional commitment to their job. Note: This can not be entered for the regional or national level; however, it will be recognized at the campus level.
  • Community Service Program – Part of student leadership is participation in community service. We want to recognize those projects that truly make an impact on the lives of others.
  • Diversity Program – On a campus such as Stony Brook, diversity is everywhere. There are some programs that highlight issues of diversity and make a significant contribution to increase student awareness and tolerance of diversity.
  • Educational Program – While social programs play an important part of building community, educational programs are what helps get important messages out to the community. It is through educational programs that education at Stony Brook goes beyond the classroom.
  • Social Program – Programs that have a social focus are important in helping build community and transition students to a new environment.
