SAAB Chapter Participates in Case Study
The Stony Brook University Chapter of the Student African American Brotherhood National Organization (SAAB) recently participated in a case study as part of an assessment of the SAAB National Organization, which has over 100 chapters at colleges, universities, and high schools throughout the country. The case study was conducted by the SAAB National Headquarters' Evaluation Team (OMG Center for Collaborative Learning). OMG is a Philadelphia-based research and consulting firm (www.omgcenter.org).

The Stony Brook SAAB Chapter is one of three of chapters from over 100 SAAB chapters nationwide chosen as a stellar chapter for benchmarking best practices in the areas of student engagement, success, chapter development and overall effectiveness. Funded by the Lumina Foundation for Education (http://www.luminafoundation.org/), the case study is part of an overall three-year long assessment project for the SAAB National Headquarters (University of Toledo): www.saabnational.org.

OMG met with our SAAB Chapter leaders, members, and advisors; selected individuals from departments that SAAB engages with; and staff from the Institutional Research and the Registrar's offices. OMG will: 1) put all the data into an analysis template, for their own internal purposes; 2) write a brief case study of the Stony Brook Chapter; and 3) use their visit, combined with surveys and other data they collect over the next two of years, to develop a final report and a data collection system for the SAAB National Headquarters.

Our SAAB Chapter is honored to have been selected for this phase of the assessment project. The chapter consists of 17 student leaders, a growing membership of over 20 students, and six professional advisors; and is the first in the State University of New York, New York State, and the U.S. northeast. The SAAB Chapter also recently hosted the first SAAB Northeastern Conference, held at Stony Brook on March 20 - 21. The SAAB initiative is coordinated by the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs welcomes the Multicultural Women's Alliance, a new coalition of female student leaders committed to promoting a better understanding and appreciation of the cultural differences that exist among women, in order to further unite as women at Stony Brook. The Multicultural Women's Alliance exists to address the issues that segregate women so that its members can embrace the beauty of their cultural and social diversity. Information about the Alliance’s Sustained Dialogue Program will be posted soon. To join this exciting new group, please contact the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
