Powerful Partnerships, Unique Opportunities

The Office of Multicultural Affairs offers numerous opportunities to learn about cultural and social similarities and differences through interactive experiences and community involvement.

Diversity Education & Training - We offer a variety of workshops and educational sessions designed to help individual students and student organizations students deal constructively with diversity. Cultural awareness, coupled with skill building can help build bridges of understanding and cooperation. Students can participate in activities that help them examine their personal cultural backgrounds, recognize how culture impacts behavior, and learn skills to work effectively in a multicultural environment. Ultimately, they will benefit through improved communication, reduced conflict, and more productive relationships.

Mentoring and Student Leadership Development - Student learning is enhanced through mentoring relationships with University faculty and staff members who create and maintain a supportive climate where continuous learning takes place. Through mentoring, students are encouraged to explore the life experiences of others while adding enrichment to their college experience.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs also promotes campus involvement and leadership development opportunities. Student leaders can increase their knowledge about diversity issues and further develop their leadership skills. Students involved with the office serve on a variety of committees and event planning groups, such as the Multicultural Student Leadership Network (MSLN) which consists of the presidents of Stony Brook's nearly 80 cultural student organizations that work together to strengthen our multicultural campus community. MSLN examines the needs and interests of our diverse community and develops ways to successfully achieve OMA's mission, while providing assistance and support.

Multicultural Programs and Campus Traditions - Throughout the year, the campus community comes together to learn about and celebrate Stony Brook's unique diversity. Popular annual traditions include:

  • The Festival of Lights, an intercultural program highlighting various religions celebrated during the Holiday season.
  • "Journey Around the World" Multicultural Show & Ethnic Food Tasting, an evening of performances and food presented by more than 20 cultural student groups.
  • Black History Month events that celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of people of the African Diaspora and the contemporary issues affecting them.
