Gender Inclusive Housing
Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) is a housing option in which two or more students share a multiple occupancy space, suite or apartment regardless of the students' sex, gender identity or gender expression. In other words, this option allows for students of any gender identity to live together regardless of sex assigned at birth.
Gender Inclusive Housing is available to Stony Brook students who are 18 years of age or older by the start of the semester in which they matriculate. GIH can be selected as a living option when students go through the room selection process on the housing portal. Spaces are available across campus and support all floor plan options: corridor, suite-style, apartment. All students that live in GIH must sign a Gender Inclusive Housing Contract, much like the Residential Programs Roommate Agreement, which outlines the expectations of the community.
Students may choose to live in Gender Inclusive Housing during Room Selection. Once logged into the housing portal, students can select 'Gender Inclusive Housing' under the 'Special Living Options' portion of the housing application.
*Please note, it may take the system up to 24-hours to recognize that a student has selected Gender Inclusive Housing. Please allow the system time to update the information before searching for potential roommates.
No, there is no additional cost to live in Gender Inclusive Housing.
Gender Inclusive Housing is not intended for romantic couples. However, we respect the privacy of our students.
