Campus Safety
Campus Safety is Everyone's Responsibility Living on campus is like living in a city, with nearly 9,000 students residing on campus and thousands of individuals taking classes, working at and using the services of the University every day. As in any community, its important for all of us to remember that safety and security is everyone's responsibility. There are things you can do to stay safe on campus: Use your access card to enter your residence hall. Don't prop exterior doors, which can provide access to unwanted individuals. Keep your bedroom, suite or apartment door locked at all times even while you're home or when you leave your room for a short time. Lock ground floor windows. Don't walk alone at night. Walk in groups, use the bus service, call the Residential Safety Program (632-WALK) or the Ride Program (632-RIDE) for an escorted walk or ride to any destination on campus. Be alert and report something unusual to University Police by calling 333 from any campus phone or 911 from any phone.
Most crimes on campus, especially those involving theft of personal property, can be classified as "crimes of opportunity." An arrest last night serves as a clear example. A Stony Brook resident student was arrested, based on information provided by other students, and numerous stolen items were retrieved from his room. The individual in question reported that he and his accomplices gained access to rooms and suites through unlocked doors. They had no difficulty stealing residents' personal belongings because many residents fail to lock their suite and/or bedrooms door. This arrest, thanks to the efforts of University Police, points up the importance of everyone taking responsibility for his/her own safety and the security of personal belongings. Please remember to lock your door.
