Hoverboards, including self-balancing scooters, battery-operated scooters and hands-free segways are prohibited in all University buildings, including residence halls, due to recent reports of fires and the potential for serious injuries. Therefore, hoverboards should not be charged, used or stored in any building.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is investigating the cause of fires and risks linked to fires in 17 states. The National Fire Protection Association and the NYS Office of Fire Prevention have issued safety alerts and warnings.
Stony Brook University joins countless universities across the country who've already implemented this restriction. This will remain in effect until the university receives a clearer understanding of the risks, problems and solutions to effectively safeguard the members of our campus community. All students, faculty, staff, vendors, volunteers, and visitors are expected to comply with this action.
Please visit the Hoverboard Safety Notice if you'd like further details.
