Recycling in the Residence Halls

Did you know that recycling just one ton of paper can save 17 trees? In the residence halls we try to make recycling as convenient as possible for the students. Here are some tips to help you make sure you’re effectively utilizing the provided recycling program.

Where you can recycle: If you live in Roosevelt, H, Kelly, Mendelsohn, Roth, or Tabler quads there is a recycling room on every floor. Each recycling room has a bin for trash, a bin for mixed paper, and a bin for bottles and cans. If you live in Chapin, Schomburg, or West Apartments you have blue bins in the rooms that can be emptied in the corresponding bins outside next to the dumpsters.

Recycling Mixed Paper

Things you can recycle: computer paper, newspapers, magazines, books, notebooks (as long as you take out the metal spirals), cardboard, fax paper, posters, pamphlets, greeting cards, envelopes, and pizza boxes

Things you can’t recycle: carbon paper, photographs, gift wrap, wax paper, paper with plastic, used plates and cups, paper towels, blue print paper, NCR paper

Please make sure all paper is dry, clean, and free of food. Flatten all cardboard!

Recycling Bottles and Cans

What you can recycle: Glass bottles and jars, brown clear and green glass, #1 PET and #2 HDPE plastics, metal and aluminum cans

How to recycle bottles and cans:

  1. Rinse the bottle or can
  2. Flatten the bottle and replace the cap
  3. Place in the recycling bin

Clothing and Electronics:

  • Instead of throwing out your old cloths place them in one of the 11 goodwill bins located near campus residence areas.
  • If you have old cell phones or ink jet cartridges you can mail them to the department of recycling and resource management in one of the provided envelopes.
  • If you have old monitors, computers, printers etc you can have them picked up via the web based work order system.

A few more things you can do for the environment:

  • Turn of electronics and lights when you are not using them
  • Use Compact fluorescent bulbs
  • Turn the faucet off when you’re not using it to conserve water
  • Print double sided
  • Buy products made of recycled material
