SPECIAL LIVING OPTIONS

The residence halls offer a number of different living options to meet your individual needs. Among the specialized living communities at Stony Brook are :

Quiet Lifestyle Communities

Located in each of the six quads, Quiet Lifestyle Communities offer residents a living environment with expanded quiet hours. Residents of Quiet Lifestyle Communities are expected to refrain from noise producing activities that extend beyond their room or suite between the hours of 8p.m. and 10a.m., daily. Residents keep noise to a minimum during these hours, to promote an atmosphere conductive to studying. "Courtesy Hours" are in effect at all times in all the residence halls.

Quiet Lifestyle Communities have been established with an emphasis on enhancing the study environment. Approximately 1,100 Quiet Lifestyle spaces have been designated throughout the campus. These communities are designed for individuals willing to show extra courtesy and respect for an atmosphere conducive to quiet and study.

24-Hour Quiet Hours

Similar to Quiet Lifestyle Communities, residents of 24-Hour Quiet Communities accept a living standard that supports strictly enforced quiet hours 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Substance-Free and Smoke-Free Rooms

Substance Free Communities provide students with a living option free of tobacco products, alcohol beverages, and other drugs. Smoke Free Communities are those which prohibit the use of any tobacco products. While substance free rooms and suites exist in every residence hall, there are also designated substance free and smoke free floors and buildings in some residential areas.

Substance Free accommodations are available across campus and require all residents and their guests to keep their room free of substances. Substances include alcohol, cigarettes, and other smoking materials. All use of illicit drugs is prohibited in the residence halls. Furthermore, all residents living in the University's residence halls must comply with State and Federal regulations related to the use of alcohol and drugs.

Living Learning Centers

Stony Brook is committed to the integration of the academic community into the residence halls. One of the ways that this is accomplished is through Living Learning Centers. Participants of Living Learning centers have opportunities to take courses in a residence hall, have close contact with faculty, participate in programs and events that support the theme of the Living Learning Center , and interact with other residents with whom they share a similar interest. Many of our Living Learning Centers offer participants the opportunity to earn a minor in a specialized field. For specific information about the Living Learning Center programs, consult the Division of Campus Residences.

Residential Cooking Communities

While most residence halls on campus require enrollment in a University meal plan, the residence halls do have limited areas where cooking is permitted. Residents who wish to cook their own meals must reside in a designated cooking floor or in a suite, and must have been enrolled as a Stony Brook student for at least two semesters. Those who decide to prepare their own meals will be assessed a cooking fee to cover the cost of equipment maintenance, cleaning, refuse removal, etc.
