Residence Hall Director

The Residence Hall Director (RHD) position here at Stony Brook is an amazing opportunity for any new professional coming into the field or for someone looking to further their RHD experience. Each RHD is on a 10 month contract and is in charge of a building of 200+ residents. Every building on campus is co-ed and houses students ranging from first years to seniors. Typically a week for one of our RHDs consists of staff meetings, 1:1’s, committee or departmental meeting, attending programs, advising your hall council, instructing, judicial hearings, facilities management, quad meetings and serving on duty. Beyond those basic duties a lot of RHDs advise another student group, sit on university wide committees, instruct additional classes, further their education and attend local, regional and national conferences. With 28 residence halls, 6 residential quads and over 250 resident assistants you will be able to enhance your skills and develop new ones through the multiple opportunities that Stony Brook has to offer their RHDs.

Apartment Living Coordinator

The Apartment Living Coordinator (ALC) position is a great opportunity for those looking to continue in Residence Life and looking to go beyond the typical Residence Hall Director position. As an ALC you will be tasked with the supervision and maintenance of multiple apartment style buildings. The ALC positions supervises both graduate and undergraduate staff members who help to assist you with the daily activities of the apartment areas. As an ALC you will have the opportunity to work with a more non-traditional student population ranging from upper-class students to international students to students working on their masters/PhD/medical degree to those raising a family in our family housing area. As the ALC works with a different student populations than in the RHD position it is important to be creative and resourceful when planning programs to engage the community. In addition the ALC is a 12 month position instead of 10 month as the apartments never fully close throughout the year. Because of the apartments are occupied year round the ALC position is more administratively heavy as students move in and out throughout the year. A typical week for an ALC is similar to that of the RHD position which consists of staff meetings, 1:1’s, committee or departmental meeting, attending programs, instructing, judicial hearings, facilities management, area meetings and serving on duty.
