STUDENT LIFE AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN LEADERSHIP
AND INVOLVEMENT
2010-2011
The Student Life Awards Committee is seeking nominations for the 2008-2009 Student Life Awards for Excellence in Leadership and Involvement.
These awards are designed to honor individuals, and recognize student organizations and advisors to student groups who have made
outstanding contributions to their communities through their involvement, service, and leadership development activities. The award categories are listed in this section.
Individual students, faculty, and staff as well as departments and organizations are invited to submit nominations for these awards. Self-nominations will also be accepted. The deadline for receipt of nominations is Friday, April 8, 2010 at 5 PM. The nomination forms can be downloaded from the Student Life Awards website.

STUDENT LEADER AWARDS
Multicultural Leadership Award
Honors student leaders who have displayed strong leadership and advocacy on diversity issues and devoted time and effort to the improvement of the University community.
Advocacy Leadership Award
Honors students who have demonstrated strong leadership in generating campus wide awareness about existing social issues and advocated for change through community service work.
Recreational Leadership Award
Honors students for their outstanding leadership in sports, recreational, or leisure activities.
Emerging Leadership Award
Honors students who have taken on new leadership roles and have demonstrated significant progress toward achieving their leadership potential through campus and community involvement. Only freshmen or sophomore students are eligible for this award.
The Theresa Montenaro 200% Student Leadership Award
Honors a student leader for exemplary service, visionary leadership, and unceasing dedication
to student campus life. Only junior or senior students are eligible for this award.
AWARD CRITERIA: Cumulative G.P.A. of 2.75 or higher; candidate must be a junior or senior; must not have previously received award; nominator must submit a Statement of
Support.

STUDENT ORGANIZATION ADVISOR AWARDS
The Sister Margaret Ann Landry, RSHM Lifetime Achievement Advising Award
Honors a faculty or staff member who has at least 5 years experience advising a student
organization and takes great strides to help the organization’s leaders.
Outstanding Advisor Award
Honors a faculty or staff member who has served as an advisor to a student organization for a minimum of 3 years .Advisor is involved and students at all times, offers knowledge and experience to the organization, and provides assistance and support on an ongoing basis.
STUDENT ORGANIZATION AWARDS
Best New Organization
Honors an organization that has started in the past 12 months and is dedicated to student life. This organization takes the initiative to make the organization visible on campus and has grown in membership since its recognition.
Most Outstanding Organization
Honors an organization which has been able to get the campus involved in its organization
issues, follows its purpose statement, plays a leadership role on campus, is
involved in the campus community, is open minded and diverse, has the ability to
accept and overcome challenges and sustains itself in creative ways.

Outstanding Program Awards
Honors a student organization for providing quality programming in the following
areas:
Multicultural Programming -
Innovative programming that promotes cross-cultural learning and
interaction, educates the campus community, help builds new relationships,
and appeals to a diverse audience, and is co-sponsored by a variety of groups.
Educational Programming -
Creative programming that promotes greater awareness of an existing academic,
political, or social issue through education that enhances student learning
and
provides a meaningful exchange of ideas.
Advocacy Programming -
Unique programming that makes the campus community aware of a major social issue, supports community service work, and implements an action-based response.
Recreational Programming Award
Honors and organization responsible for the development and /or execution of a recreational /leisure program or
sporting event /program whose outcome had as significant impact of the University community.
Social Programming
Campus programming that has broad-based appeal provides opportunities to meet new people while having fun.
Collaborative Programming Award
Honors a student organization that has consistently collaborated with a variety of student groups and/or University departments throughout the academic year to produce
quality activities and/or services.
Student Life Enhancement Award
Honors an organization for developing and implementing improvements in the quality of student life and demonstrates an efficient use of resources .Fosters positive change within the Stony Brook community through effective planning and student activism.
Distinguished Service Award
Honors an organization for performing continuous service to the student body and
the University community through exceptional efforts that are meaningful, make a
lasting impact, and foster positive relationships.
