Requesting a club e-mail account
Before requesting a sparky (Unix) e-mail account.Your club must be registered with Student Activities Center (room 219) for the current year.
After your club is registered for the current year, the club president or another e-board member may fill out a Club Account Request Form at the Student Union SINC Site (Room 080). If the club president fills out the club account request s/he will be the account onwer, unless another member has been appointed to be take responsibility for the account.
After the account is set up, the club account owner may change the password without a paper form.
Club Account ownership must be renewed at the begining of each year if the club account owner graduate, and in general, whenever club ownership changes. Click here for more information about account deactivation and deletion.
Club account deactivation and deletion
Are you the club account owner and are graduating soon?
Club e-board members must be notified of the existence of the club account and the procedures outlined on this page.
- At the beginning of each year, and every time club ownership changes, the club account owner must fill out a Club Account Request Form to update ownership and password.
- If the owner of the account is no longer a student, the club account will be flagged for deactivation or deletion. If the account is scheduled to be deactivated/deleted, the club must follow instructions sent by e-mail.
- Before going to the Union SINC Site to fill out the Club Account Request Form, a club must be already registered with Student Activities Center (room 219).
Accessing your Club Account
Allow at least 2 business days for account setup. The account owner and the president will be notified via e-mail when the account is available. The Club account owner may access the club e-mail account by using webmail and/or SSH. Webspace may be accessed by using SSH (or any other FTP program). Visit the help desk on-line documentation to learn more about File Transfer Protocol (FTP).
Changing club account password
Remember to change the account Unix password every 120 days (Sparky passwords may be changed by the owner by going to the Library SINC Site or Union SINC Site.
Passwords may also be changed by the club account owner using SSH or (other secure telnet program). Visit your help desk knowledge based site for instructions to change sparky (unix) passwords.
What is my club's E-mail Address?
Clubs may choose usernames that are up to 8 characters in length. To avoid mistakes when club members e-mail the club, choose a uername that resembles your Club Official Name. For example of your Club Official Name is IEEE, your club loginname would be ieee. Your club e-mail address will be ieee@ic.sunysb.edu
Requesting Web space
In order to set up a website for your club, the club MUST:
- be registered with Student Activities Center (Room 219).
- Have a Club Account on Sparky.
If your Club does not have an e-mail account, you must fill out a Club Request Form at the Student Union SINC Site (Room 080). Your club must renew account ownership once a year. - From Your Club's Sparky Account:
Send an email to: webmaster@ic.sunysb.edu- Subject: "Request for website"
- Message Content:
- Your Club's Sparky username.
- The official Club Name registered with Student Activities Center and the Student Union
- You will receive an email response within 2 business days with the location to place your website.
Accessing club account webspace
Webspace may be accessed by using SSH (or any other telnet program). Visit the following site for more instructions on how to log into sparky using SSH
Your account will be housed in a folder called Clubs in our webserver. For example, if your club's user/login name is ieee:
- If you are in a SINC Site: double click on the SSH icon. Visit the help desk link with more information about softweb and to download SSH program to your computer.
- Click on File > connect . and enter the following
information when the login window appears:
- Login: your_club_username (3 to 8 characters)
- Host Name: sparky.ic.sunysb.edu
- Password: your_club_sparky_password
- Press the enter key
NOTE: The club account owner may change the club account password. Sparky passwords must start with a letter, contain at least 1 number( but no more than 3 numbers). Password length must be from 6 to 8 alphanumerical characters.
- To upload files from and to your webspace, you will need to use the FTP Client. Visit the help desk on-line documentation to learn more about File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Unix.
- The web address to your website will be: http://www.sinc.sunysb.edu/Clubs/ieee
- The Sparky directory will be: /usr/www/Clubs/ieee
- To get to your Club's directory from your Sparky directory, type: cd /usr/www/Clubs/ieee
- If you would like to access you website files from Sparky quickly, you
can create a symbolic link in your Sparky account following these steps:
- Make sure you are in your home directory by typing pwd
- Type ln -s /usr/www/Clubs/ieee www
You are now able to switch to your website directory by using the command cd www and back to your home directory using cd
