These men also felt that the trend of black fraternities needed to be moved in a more progressive direction that would reflect the consciousness of the time.

Phi Beta Sigma

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., was founded at Howard University in Washington DC on January 9, 1914 by three young black male students. The founders, Honorable Abram Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard Francis Morse and Honorable Charles Ignatious Brown wanted to organize a Greek-letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of Brotherhood, Scholarship and Service. The founders deeply wished to create an organization that viewed itself as "a part of" the general community rather than "apart from" the general community. They believed that each potential member should be judged on his own merits rather than his family background or affluence…without regard of race, nationality, color, skin tone or texture of hair. They wished and wanted their fraternity to exist as a part of an even greater brotherhood-sisterhood which would be devoted to the "inclusive we" rather than the "exclusive we."

From its inception, the founders also conceived Phi Beta Sigma as a mechanism to deliver services to the general community. Rather than gaining skills to be utilized exclusively for themselves and their immediate families, the founders of Phi Beta Sigma held the deep conviction that they should return their newly acquired skills to the communities from which they had come. This deep conviction was mirrored in the fraternity motto, "Culture For Service and Service For Humanity."

Phi Chi Epsilon

Phi Chi Epsilon Fraternity, Incorporated was founded at the Potsdam campus of the State University of New York with the mission of bringing together men who share a common desire to develop brotherhood with their fellow students. The brothers at the Beta Chapter at Stony Brook University best demonstrate this diversity, where the Wolves, as they have been nicknamed, are proud to be an integral and positive facet of the student population. The Beta Chapter at Stony Brook was established on November 15, 1991 and despite the initial hardships of establishing and sustaining a new organization, the Wolves have made tremendous advancements and have gone on to carve out their own niche.

Today the members of the fraternity are respected and recognized with admiration. They believe that through unity they will ensure success; and through the combination of perseverance and their accomplishments, they will achieve an even more illustrious future.

These men felt the need to form an organization that would represent Asian students in a more positive way and would help to breakdown the negative stereotypes by educating themselves and others about their heritage and culture. In the spring of 1994 these eleven men, struggling together, built the foundation of Pi Delta Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.

Today the brothers of Pi Delta Psi, coming together from different nationalities and backgrounds, continue their unified struggle to achieve the vision of empowering and uniting the Asian community. Sigma Beta Rho

The Alpha Chapter of Sigma Beta Rho was founded on August 16, 1996 at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The founders came together with a vision of an organization for the betterment and preservation of South Asians in the United States. They envisioned a Greek-Lettered organization to this extent in which membership would remain constant and growing and would facilitate involvement from its alumni members. They realized that in order for their vision to truly become a reality they needed to spread their principles and ideals to other college campuses and establish a nationwide network.

August 22, 1998 witnessed the induction of several new members to Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity with whom brought the establishment of the Beta and Gamma Chapters at the State University of New York at Binghamton and St. John's University in Jamaica, Queens respectively. At this time eight men from three different universities would be given the status of founding fathers as they were the brothers who would establish the fraternity for years to come.

These eight men established this fraternity to foster the ideals of Society, Brotherhood, and Remembrance amongst its members. They believed that through their bonds of brotherhood they would be able to establish an organization that would instill unity amongst its members, promote South Asian culture, and aid the greater community at large. They felt that the principles of Society, Brotherhood, and Remembrance would develop leaders from young men both as undergraduate students on their college campuses and as professionals in their lives upon graduation.

These young men would serve as role models and mentors in their respective communities, break down barriers between different ethnic groups, and through their leadership would aid their communities in this country in attaining a better and brighter future than it would have had. It is to this end that the brothers of Sigma Beta Rho work so diligently towards to this day. All the brothers strive to uphold the ideals of Society, Brotherhood, and Remembrance so that one day our future may be a brighter one.
