For International Visiting Scholars
You must have the SUNY international Health Insurance coverage while researching, studying, teaching at Stony Brook. When you first arrive at Stony Brook University, you should contact an advisor in the Office of International Services, 2401 Computer Science Building, so they can set up the insurance enrollment form for you. You may pay by check at the Health Insurance Office in the West Campus Infirmary; or if you are paying by any other mode, you must visit the Bursar, on the second floor of the Administration Building. Once you pay the insurance bill you can visit the Health Insurance Office where they will give you a temporary ID card. This card should be carried by you at all times.
The West Campus Infirmary has agreed to provide medical services for scholars who are enrolled in the SUNY International health insurance plan. If you wish to make use of these services, and waive your international health insurance plan deductible as well, then you must pay the full Infirmary fee that is billed to our students each semester. When you visit the Infirmary the first time, please bring your insurance ID card, a letter from your academic department, indicating the dates you will be researching/teaching here, and a check or money order made payable to Stony Brook University for the Infirmary fee.
For Optional Practical Training participants
Once you graduate from Stony Brook, you may wish to continue your international health insurance plan coverage for up to one year. If you do wish to do this, you may apply at the Health Insurance Office in the West Campus Infirmary. Or you may contact the following for an enrollment form: leta.edelson@stonybrook.edu.
The minimum length of insurance coverage is three months, and the insurance must begin effective either August 15 or January 15. You cannot have any lapse of insurance coverage between the mandatory insurance and this extension plan.
As an OPT participant, you will have a $50 deductible for every NEW medical problem for which you need medical services. This deductible cannot be waived. In addition, you cannot use the West Campus Infirmary once you begin the OPT insurance coverage.
