The Counseling Center has mental health and outreach programs designed to enhance personal growth, develop coping skills and interpersonal skills, develop a sense of community and an appreciation of differences, and aid cultural transitions. Programs offered include stress management and mindfulness meditation techniques, assertiveness training, test anxiety management, study skills, procrastination reduction, anger management, communication and relationship skills, and skills for dealing with upset people. Any University group may call the Counseling Center to request an outreach presentation. We also sponsor a weekly radio show, (WUSB on Fridays, 2:00 - 2:30 p.m) "Taking Care of Yourself", which focuses on health and mental health issues.
The University Counseling Center realizes the need to understand the diverse mix of cultural and social groups that make up the campus community. Through its liaisons, the Counseling Center works cooperatively with the following groups: The Mentor Program, Division of Campus Residences, Undergraduate Studies, EOP/AIM, academic departments, Commuter Students Office, the Wo / Men's Center, International Student Services, Disabilities Support Services, and the Asian American Center. In addition, counselors consult with student clubs, such as fraternities, sororities, the Minority Student Planning Board, and the Gospel Choir as well as cultural, advocacy, and religious organizations (see the Asian American Journal hot link: www.geocities.com/stonybrookaaj/index. htm). We also facilitate various discussion groups, including the Asian American Forum Discussion Group, the Asian American Women's Voices Discussion Group, and the International Students' Discussion Group. Any group, organization, or office on campus, which does not already have a liaison counselor at the Center, may call the Center's Assistant Director for Consultation and Outreach at 632-6720 to discuss a consultation liaison.
