Veterans/Students Activation Info

MILITARY DEPLOYMENT POLICY
(STUDENTS)
AT STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY

We are providing this information to assist the Veteran/Student in making decisions about their academic status if asked to report for mobilization into an active duty status. Stony Brook University will recognize one of the following upon student's request.

1. STUDENT STATUS

A student/veteran may remain in a student status for duration not to exceed 30 days from date of activation (active duty). In the event the service member's active duty exceeds this period, the University will reserve the right to officially withdraw the student from all courses to prevent academic and/or financial hardship.

a. Procedure

The student is responsible for notifying the Office of Veterans Affairs at Stony Brook University of activation / return date and submit appropriate official documentation of mobilization.

The student is encouraged to notify the appropriate departmental academic Dean. The academic departments will attempt to work with those individuals asked to mobilize.

BY DEFAULT: If the Office of Veterans Affairs does not receive notification of the student's return to the University, s/he will be automatically withdrawn from the University effective the date the service member is mobilized to active duty.

2. WITHDRAWALS

If the student elects to be withdrawn s/he will receive a "W" on all semester courses. However, the University will add a remark on the student's academic transcript noting the reason for withdrawal as "Active Duty Military Recall".

The student is responsible for submitting the appropriate documentation for the financial review required for students who are withdrawing from the University, including the return of Federal or State financial aid funds.

a. Procedure

The student must submit a written request to be withdrawn from classes with official documentation of active duty mobilization to the Office of Veterans Affairs at Stony Brook University.

3. CANCELLATION

If the student elects to exercise the Cancellation option, s/he will be ask to return all cash monies received from the University. At which time, the University will notify the appropriate funding agencies (i.e. government, state and financial institutions) of student's status and all monies will be returned accordingly.

a. Procedure

The student must submit a written request to exercise their cancellation of attendance with official documentation of active duty mobilization to the Office of Veterans Affairs at Stony Brook University.
