Chapter 30, The New "Montgomery" GI Bill
Am I eligible?
An individual must have served for 2 to 3 years of continuous active duty after July 1, 1985 and contributed $100/month for 12 months of service.
What are the benefits?
The MGIB program provides up to 36 months of education benefits. Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following your release from active duty. All Chapter 30 applications and benefits originated from SUNY at Stony Brook are processed through the VA Regional Office in Buffalo , NY .

How Can You Apply?
Your unit will give you a copy of your Certificate of release or discharge from Active Duty (DD Form 214).
Electronically: You can submit the VA Form 22-1990 electronically through the VA website: http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp . After this is done, submit a copy of the certificate of eligibility to the Office of Veterans Affairs.
Manually: You have to fill out a VA Form 22-1990. You can get a hardcopy from the Office of Veterans Affairs in Administration Building , Room 348.
In addition, Stony Brook students need to fill out a Stony Brook Application , and a copy of their current schedule needs to be submitted.
Note: You must verify your enrollment the last day of every month during the semester you are certified for benefits. Failure to verify will result in failure to recieve payment from the VA.
